How diversity makes science better

Our new short report on why we need to stand up for diversity, equity and inclusion in science.

Since President Trump’s inauguration in January 2020, the US administration had launched unprecedented attacks on initiatives supporting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace and in education. Science and universities have been particularly attacked, but the response from universities and scientific bodies has been more of acquiescence than a defence of the importance of DEI, not just for creating more just learning and work spaces, but in improving the quality of the science.

Independent SAGE believes scientists (including the physical, medical, health and social sciences) need to stand up to the attacks on DEI and make the forceful case on why it is necessary. We believe it so strongly that we have come out of retirement to do so, with our new three-page report . We hope that our contribution will be useful and widely shared.
